Description
Mr. Goods demonstrates a striking change of appearance between this card and another one, both of which were produced for the Ohio Penitentiary. Given that Mr. Goods is depicted in a prison uniform in this card and in his street clothes in the other (the first one produced), it is presumed that he was shaven upon ingest into prison, creating this marked, visible difference. This second card is not complete, suggesting that it was produced as an ancillary record to the completed first card. Of interest is that the measurements—or the filing indicators—were added to this second card, allowing this surrogate to be correctly filed even if lost from its pair. However, since this second card does not contain Mr. Goods’ name, the face would not be able to be associated with a name as Bertillon so assiduously desired. Mr. Goods had red hair and was imprisoned for two years for the crime of “shooting to wound” that took place in Licking County, Ohio. He was a brickmaker.
