Chas Grey, OSR 1836, 2/8/04, ink, photographs, cards, 5.25 x 6.5 inches
R.U. Hastings, Bertillon Officer (n.d.)
Collection of the Ohio History Connection
DescriptionMr. Grey, a farm laborer from Kentucky, was only 19 when first measured by R.U. Hastings at the Ohio State Reformatory, but his extreme youth does not appear to be the only reason he was remeasured approximately two years later (as marked in red). On the front of the card, in the field “Remarks incident to measurements,” Hastings noted, “Sore when measured—must be measured again.” It is not entirely clear from this brief context whether Hastings was implying that Mr. Grey was in physical pain (“sore”) or angry (“sore”) at the time of the first measurement. Mr. Grey had burns over a significant portion of his body, on his face, neck, chest, and hands.
