John Melvin, OSR 1919, "filed September 26, 1913", ink, photographs, cards, 5.625 x 6.375 inches
R.U. Hastings, Bertillon Officer (n.d.)
Collection of the Ohio History Connection
Mr. Melvin, a farmer and teacher of Scotch-Irish descent, was convicted of forgery in Marion County, Ohio. His case is of especial interest here because his Bertillon record has a second card attached to it containing a published version of his photograph and Bertillon measurements. This reproduction of his photograph and measurements appears to have been published in a book, given the presence of page numbers. In addition, considering the small scale and rounded corners of this page, the original booklet was perhaps even made to fit in a pocket, for use by the police in apprehending criminals. This is especially likely given that it is noted that Mr. Melvin escaped from the Ohio State Reformatory on Tuesday, July 19, 1904.
