Anonymous, after Jacques Callot, Beggars Seated and Eating, probably 17th c. Etching, 73 x 83 mm. University of Pittsburgh Art Gallery (2010.1.509)

Callot’s subjects have not only been copied, but reinterpreted as well. This composition is after Les Gueux (The Beggars), a series originally printed in 1622-1623. The printmaker faithfully rendered the figures, but allowed himself room for artistic invention, juxtaposing onto one plate two distinct characters from Callot’s series. Rather than a copy, this print should be viewed as an adaptation of the master’s famous vagabonds.
