DescriptionA painting from the art collection of Princeton University shows two young schoolboys sketching from Callot’s prints: the boy on the left presents a figure from the Beggars, his elbow resting on what is probably his sketchbook, in which he drew two characters from the Gobbi. This painting gives evidence both of the role of prints in seventeenth-century Europe, as well as of Callot’s popularity. The UAG owns the prints depicted in the painting: two impressions from the Gobbi (one displayed here) and a copy from The Beggars.
